Mountain Mysteries II: The Unexplained by Wallins Sixth Grade 2008 w/ Judith V Hensley & guests

Those who inhabit, or are descended from roots in, the Appalachian Mountains tend to be connected to the invisible things of the world. Even people who rigidly deny the existence of ghosts will acknowledge that there are some things that simply have no logical explanation. This conviction often fuels an oral story telling tradition handed down from generation to generation. The stories in this volume represent a new step in an old direction as the students of Wallins’ sixth grade went out into the community to gather stories old and new to share with each other, and the world. In addition to the local tales, special guest writers like Silas House and Jack Wright lend a hand and a tale or two.

Walking Free: The Life of Nellie Zimmerman

In May of 1976, at the age of 71, the deaf and blind Nellie Zimmerman was released from the Massillon State Hospital. After nineteen years of confinement she took her first breath of freedom. Nellie went on to attend college, became a well known lecturer and an award winning life skills instructor at a group home for deaf and deaf-blind teenage boys. Rosezelle Boggs-Qualls and Dr. Daryl Greene go behind the headlines to bring Nellie Zimmerman’s story to life, as told by Emily Street Hensel, her companion and friend and as documented by genealogical research and the national publicity surrounding her accomplishments. Dr. Greene writes, “This is an incredible story of the victory of the human spirit over what most of us would consider insurmountable circumstances. Once you read it, you will see your own life in a new light.” 244 pages

A Pocket Full of Frogs by Polly A. Ritchie

Camp Was No Piece Of Cake …

School was out and summer vacation had begun.  A year older, Tara wanted to be on her own for the summer.  Just the same, Gran shipped her off to day camp at Prairie Fields. Tara’s first day and her mood had already dropped down in the dumps.  And she was growing fearful from all the scary tales told by Hunter Berry and Herman Paul, close knit friends. It wasn’t long before she butted heads with her counselor, Matt Jordan, but found solace in catching the quirky little frogs. Then she met Charlie and a new friendship began.  In her unique way, Charlie set about to polish Tara’s limited skills. With every session came new adventures.  The boring times Tara spent in the nature study of herbs, or was it weeds, or potions of witchery?  The worst was yet to come as she faced the rough hilly terrains, the creatures, the snakes, and drifting tides.  Hard to swallow was the same bag of tales circulating among the kids about the wild Indian living in the woods.  And Hunter somehow knows Tara’s every move, thus making her a target for scorn.  Getting back at him cost her a really crummy five minutes of time out hugging a tree. Not until campout night when Tara comes face to face with the Great Indian, does the whole puzzle come together.  After facing her biggest fear, she felt like she had gone one hundred and eighty degrees.  While she had spent most of her summer trying to dodge Hunter, he had spent his time trying to get her attention.  Finally, as vacation time grew short a most interesting discovery has brought them together.

The Angels' Share by Brooks Carver

Out of the chaotic nineteenth-century period of Reconstruction comes former Sergeant Jack Grady of the Stonewall Brigade, his family, and a diverse cast of Southern characters trying to rebuild their ravaged land. The first few chapters portray his return from the War to his farm in northeastern Tennessee. He finds the place in ruins, livestock gone and his family near starvation. Jack and his wife, Annajean with the help of their two sons and a Cherokee friend, manage to get a small crop planted. In early July, l865, for badly needed cash, Jack and two other hardened veterans of the Confederacy deliver a load of whiskey from Knoxville to New Orleans through the lawless and war torn South. The journey highlights a rich tapestry of life and adventure during this bleak period. A horrific incident in the Louisiana bayous transforms Jack Grady into a legend, a heroic symbol so badly needed by people beaten down by historic events.

Meet this beleaguered farm family from the mountains and get a perspective of our nation that transcends and enhances textbook history.

The Angels’ Share was awarded the bronze medal for historical fiction in ForeWord Magazine’s Book of the Year Award in 2003.
